Publications of the Ships on Stamps Unit
- The Unit has had an active policy of publishing data
and information about watercraft appearing on stamps.
A short history of our publishing
efforts has been compiled. As may be expected, the major
source of information provided by the Unt for its members
is our bi-monthly publication, Watercraft Philately.
All publications mentioned below can be ordered using the order
blank here.
- Two handbooks of all known stamps through the 1999 Scott catalog featuring
ships, this includes a list of over 3500 named ships that have appeared
on stamps. This list of named ships also appears in the CDROM described below.
- An index of the
contents of all volumes of Watercraft Philately.
- Watercraft Philately on CD-ROM, Volumes 1-52. edited by Myron Molnau. This CD-ROM contains Adobe pdf copies of all volumes of Watercraft Philately (WP) from 1952 to 2006. Also on the CD-ROM are two preliminary versions of an index to WP and a copy of "Launching your ships on stamps collection."
- Biographies and Images of Ships Shown on Stamps of the World edited by Dan Rodlie. Eight files on the CDROM contain information about over 1,000 ships and with of 1,805 stamps showing those ships. Each letter A to D has two files, one containing the name of the ship and a link to an image of the stamp featuring that ship. The other contains information about the ship including the ship name, stamp(s) showing the ship with links to the image, the ship particulars, a short history of the ship and the source of information used.
In addition to these files, there are seven additional files with information that is useful to all ship stamp collectors. These include images of postcards showing ships that have appeared on stamps, an index to volumes 1 through 49 of Watercraft Philately, a slide show showing the development of ships through the ages, a list of all named ships found in ATA Handbook 117, a list of books and other references useful to the ship stamp collector and a list of ship stamps by ship types.
To give you an idea of the CDROM contents, here is the CDROM menu page.
The CDROM is computer platform independent. All that is needed to use this comprehensive source of information is a computer with a web browser. Only the slide show requires a program which is a free download.
The editor of the biographies is Dan Rodlie, the editor of Watercraft Philately. He obtained the information included from Watercraft Philately, the Ships on Stamps Internet discussion list, contacts from many countries and his extensive library and ship stamp collection.
The CDROM is available from the Unit. For further information or to order, contact the Unit at 2117 E 6th St, Moscow, ID 83843 or e-mail
The price given here is postpaid, First Class in the US and Airmail Letter-post elsewhere in the world.
Unit members in US and Canada $10, elsewhere $12.50
Non-members in US and Canada $20, elsewhere $22.50
- Launching your ships on stamps collection by W. A. Coffey is a new
Unit publication. It is aimed at the new recruit to ship stamp collecting
who may start out full speed ahead only to be in danger of foundering
as he is overwhelmed by hundreds of ship stamps depicting watercraft
of every type and vintage. At this point, the collector should drop
anchor and retire to his cabin with a copy of "Launching your ships
on stamps collection." Therein he will find the story, in brief, of
the development of ships from pre-historic times to the present. Long-time
collectors will also find the items of interest in here.
The main theme is the relationship of ship types to the times and locales
in chronological order from paddles to sail to steam to nuclear power.
Illustrations show the various ships depicted on stamps. Numerous ways
by which ships on stamps may be collected and displayed are given. Suggestions
on handling and storing stamps, nomenclature of the sea and a bibliography
round out the book.
This 18 page book is available bound either in spiral plastic or loose-leaf
three-hole punched.
All publications can be ordered on the order blank
here.
